PH gov't to provide legal aid to jailed Filipina in Kuwait

THE government would provide legal and consular assistance to the Filipino woman sentenced to 10 years in jail after being convicted for joining the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), MalacaƱang said on Tuesday.

In a statement, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said the Duterte administration respects the decision of the Kuwaiti court to sentence the 32-year-old Filipina maid and deport her after her jail term.

Andanar said the Philippine Embassy to Kuwait would just make sure that the arrested Filipina would get due process.

"We respect the judicial processes of other nations in dealing with Filipinos abroad being prosecuted for violation of the laws of their host countries,"

"In the case of the Filipina in Kuwait, what our embassy can do is to extend legal and consular assistance and make sure our kababayan gets due process and her rights are not violated," he added.

The woman was arrested in August when she arrived in the oil-rich Gulf state where she worked as a domestic helper.

The suspect had allegedly confessed that she was member of the ISIS militant group and was plotting terrorist attacks in the emirate.

She allegedly told the investigators that her husband was an active fighter with ISIS in Libya and he had asked her to come to Kuwait from the Philippines as a domestic helper.
