PNP nabs 3 Korean fugitives

PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief Ronald Dela Rosa presented on Monday three Korean fugitives included in the list of wanted persons of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).

Arrested by the PNP- Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Anti-Transnational Crime Unit (ATCU) in separate police operations were Yong Ho Jeon, and couple Yang Sum and Yang Myung Ock Yeo.

Dela Rosa said Yong, who is facing charges of swindling in Jeonju Discrtict Court in South Koreas, was arrested on March 25 in his rented unit in Milano Residences in Makati City, where he was staying with his Korean wife and mother.

He said Yong was part of a group that established a supposed call center in South Korea targeting their fellow nationals and companies interested in borrowing money from banks and other financial institutions.

Dela Rosa said the group would introduce themselves as staff or someone connected with the financial institutions and ask them for money allegedly to be used in the facilitation of their loans.

He said the group was able to collect around 6 billion Korean Won or more than P200 billion from their victims.

After their victims filed charges against them, Yong and his three cohorts went to the Philippines to hide.

Based on investigation, Yong and his group then established a telephone fraud and extortion activities in Malate, Manila.

Meanwhile the Korean couple also wanter by the Interpol was arrested on March 29 in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Yang Sum was arrested by the virtue of an Interpol red notice for three counts of fraud in their country while his wife was nabbed for violating immigration laws.

The three are now being held at the CIDG-ATCU office in Camp Crame.

The CIDG for their part is currently coordination with the Bureau of Immigration, Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Korean Embassy in the Philippines for additional information and records regarding the arrested suspects. (SunStar Philippines)
