Police eye 4 men behind Davao fire

MEMBERS of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) are conducting its investigation to identify the four individuals who are allegedly behind the fire in Davao City on Friday.

The authorities received information from concerned citizens about four individuals having a shabu session inside the house at Isla Verde in Barangay 23-C where the fire reportedly started.

Initial investigation said that unattended candle inside the house of one Talisay Muhamad caused the fire.

The blaze gutted over a thousand houses, leaving around 3,700 families homeless. Damage to properties was placed at P15 million.

DCPO director Senior Supt. Vicente Danao said the Sta. Ana Police Station personnel, under Supt. Caezar Cabuhat, are now working on the investigation.

Cabuhat said one of the four individuals is allegedly a notorious drug pusher who previously figured in Oplan Tokhang (Toktok, Hangyo) in 2013.

"According to the reports, after their (four individuals) shabu session, itinapon nila yung kandila na gamit-gamit nila. Ang masaklap niyan, dahil bangag (high in drugs) na sila hindi nila namalayan na yung tinapon nila na kandila sa basurahan ay umiilaw pa. Umalis sila sa bahay at dun nag simula ang sunog," Danao said.

Senior Fire Officer 1 Ramil Gillado, of the Bureau of Fire Protection's Investigation and Intelligence Section, earlier said the villages affected were Barangay 21-C, Barangay 22-C and Barangay 23-C, Isla Verde in Boulevard.

Gillado said the incident was reported to them at around 8:15 p.m. The fire was controlled at 1:25 a.m. on Saturday.
