THE Police Regional Office (PRO)-Central Visayas said the Ironman 70.3 Philippines on Sunday, August 6, was generally peaceful.
PRO-Central Visayas Director Jose Espino said there is a need to improve the crowd control but the security for the international event was perfect.
The Espino said the death of a participant was "unfortunate" but it was beyond the scope of the security.
He said aside from a vehicular incident caused by a mentally retarded person who crossed the street, the event flowed smoothly.
During the swim leg of the race held at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City, a triathlete from Luzon died of cardiac arrest.
The victim was identified as Eric Nadal Mediavillo, 41, from Laguna.
Mediavillo was rushed to the Mactan Doctors’ Hospital where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival at 8:45 a.m.
This is the second time that a participant of the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines in Cebu died. The first one was in 2012 when Cebuano Ramon Igaña died during the bike portion of the race. (SunStar Cebu)
