THERE is a small, sweet irony in the year-ender CSR program of Quest Hotel Cebu. Although money may not literally grow on trees, the Quest Hotel Cebu’s “Giving Tree” will create proceeds for humanitarian deeds of the Daughters of Wisdom, a non-profit government organization.
This year’s Giving Tree will display items made from pages of disposed magazines and 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the products’ craftsmen.
Since July this year, Quest Hotel Cebu has been dutifully disposing of glossy magazines set up in the rooms and passing them on to Daughters of Wisdom’s sister Helene and her team, who trained detainees of the Naga City Jail to craft home accessories and other items out of finely and tightly-rolled magazine pages.
The skillfully-rolled paper is then covered with emulsifiers and become raw materials to make the décor for the hotel’s Christmas tree.
These decorations and other accessories will be available for patrons and guests to purchase starting at P50.
One hundred percent of the income from the sales will go back to the inmates, through the purchase of mats and blankets or malong to make their situation a little more humane.
Sister Helene involves herself in the plight of the inmates with the hope to train them in skills that could later help the reformed reintegrate themselves in the society.
With the conviction that everyone deserves a second chance, the Daughters of Wisdom and Quest Hotel Cebu joined together to spread the positivity.
Guests and patrons are encouraged to support the project by patronizing the products.
The Christmas Giving Tree was unveiled last Nov. 28.
