Quijano: A very expensive bowl of soup

IF you didn’t know, Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith was meted a one-game suspension for “conduct detrimental to the team.” At first Coach Ty Lue was coy about it when pressed for details but it was later on revealed that Smith threw a bowl of soup at assistant coach Damon Jones.

And how much did that stunt cost Smith? A cool $94,897. That’s P4,925,154 my dear Pinoy Last Rounders.

A. Very. Expensive.Bowl. Of. Soup.

Which was not even piping hot I presume, as there were no reports of burn injuries suffered by Jones.

SPOILED. This incident reminded of why I prefer writing about fighters than basketball players.

Though basketball is a sport I follow and play (marginally, at best) I still have the highest respect for and would rather write about the Mickey Wards and the Arturo Gattis of the boxing world than spoiled NBA players like Smith.

Fierce as lions inside a ring, rarely do you hear of fighters like Ward attacking their own trainers or coaches.

On the contrary, they entrust life and limb to them, relying on their instincts, instructions and intuition come fight night.

On the ring you could die on any given night so there’s no place for false bravado, amigo.

But for fake tough guys like Smith? Yeah, go ahead. Throw that bowl of soup, boy.

And for what? I don’t really know. But it doesn’t really matter. Unless he was assaulted first and reacted in self-defense, nothing justifies such dastardly, unprofessional conduct.

The fact that he was suspended and fined is a damning indictment of how uncalled for that was.

Remember this is a guy who once got fined for untying the shoe lace of a player of an opposing team.

Yeah, you read that correctly. Google it if you are skeptical. Or as the Tagalogs would say, “I-gugell mo.” Well that’s that. I’m sorry I had to veer away from writing about that excellent heavyweight matchup tomorrow featuring Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz, but I just had to get that off my chest.

I got Wilder winning that one via close decision in a tough grueling fight At least these guys will be throwing bombs all night. Not bowls of soup.

LAST ROUND. It’s on a fellow musician and kindred soul, Lloyd Dante who recently celebrated his birthday. Cheers!
