Quiñahan to sit out rest of season

AFTER helping Rain or Shine Elasto Painters reach the finals of the 2014 PBA Philippine Cup last February, Cebuano banger Joseph Ronald Quiñahan, will be sitting out the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

Quiñahan underwent knee surgery for the injury he acquired during the semifinal round of the previous conference against the Petron Blaze Boosters.

“I’ll be out for the rest of the season. Next All-Filipino Conference pa ko makaduwa kay three to five months ko papahuwayon,” the hulking former UV Green Lancers center told Sun.Star Cebu.

What was expected to be a minor injury that would send back the 2007 seventh overall pick to active duty in just two to three weeks, turned out to be a career-threatening injury for the former Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) MVP.

“Na-operahan ko sa lateral meniscus kay nabuslot ang akong knee cap. Unya nilapos sa cartilage. Karon April 9, scheduled pud ko para PRP (platelet-rich plasma) procedure sa akong achilles (tendon),” said Quiñahan.

After the Philippine Cup, Quiñahan underwent checkups and rehabilitation for the injury he got when Alex Cabagnot hit his right knee in a loose ball scuffle, forcing the Cebuano center to limp out of the game.

After the Philippine Cup Finals, Quiñahan went on a two-week rehab program but the pain insisted, resulting to an operation last March 25.

“Right after the All-Filipino Cup finals, I underwent rehab for two weeks to observe if the pain will go, but it did not. Mao to nga nagpa MRI dayon ko, ” Quiñahan said.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Edgar Michael Eufemio, an expert in sports medicine for more than 20 years, conducted the operation on Quiñahan.

With the PBA Season shortened to give way to the Gilas Pilipinas squad prepartion for the 2014 Fiba World Cup in Spain and the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea, Quiñahan’s return is expected to be at the start of the 2014-2015 Philippine Cup in October. RCM

“I don’t consider this a career-threatening injury kay mas molig-on pa man ni siya kay sa original when this will completely heal,” Quiñahan said.

As to his Achilles injury, Quinahan has been playing through pain since the start of the quarterfinal round of the recently concluded Philippine Cup.
