Quisumbing picks village councilor to manage reclamation area

MANDAUE City Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing has appointed a barangay councilor to manage the North Reclamation Area (NRA).

Quisumbing said Labogon Barangay Councilor Marvin Soco will be appointed as the assistant city administrator, a recently created position. At the same time, he will serve as the manager of NRA.

Soco resigned as the barangay councilor of Labogon last Monday and submitted his paperworks to the City Hall last Tuesday. He ran as councilor under the Liberal Party during May 2016 elections, but did not win.

Since there is no clear boundaries yet on what barangay the NRA belongs to, Quisumbing said it is important to have a manager for the reclamation area so cleanliness and security will be taken care of.

“One of the problems that we’re facing is that, technically, the reclamation area does not fall under a particular barangay so everything from sanitation, to peace and order, to even road conditions and street lighting are usually not reported as quickly as the concerns in other barangays because there’s no barangay captain so to speak,” said Quisumbing.

“There’s also no manager for that particular area so given in the increase of the activity in that area in commercial establishments sama sa Bai Hotel, restaurants all of the shopping venues in that area, we’ve decided to appoint a manager for the reclamation area,” he said.

The NRA starts from Foton on A. Soriano Avenue up to Mahiga Creek. It also covers Parkmall, City Time Square, Mandani Bay and the private hospitals.

The job of the NRA manager will be to oversee the deployment of security personnel so there will be regular garbage collection and cleanliness will be maintained. He will also do an inventory to recommend areas that need road repairs, street lighting and other concerns.

Quisumbing said the City appointed Soco for the position as of Monday, February 26.

Currently, Quisumbing said it is still being worked out how to properly proportion NRA between Barangays Subangdaku, Tipolo, Guizo, Mantuyong and Centro.

“In the interim so that the provision of services does not suffer, we will appoint a manager for the time being just to make sure that all of those services are not left behind,” he added. (FMG/SunStar Cebu)
