Remaining Zamboanga worker escapes Abu Sayyaf

THE last remaining Zamboangeño construction worker kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Sulu last month managed to escape his abductors early morning Monday, the military said.

Joint Task Force Sulu commander Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana said Edmundo Ramos has sought for help from a civilian after he escaped his abductors in the vicinity of Tapiantana, Basilan around 1 a.m.

Ramos was one of the four construction workers who were taken from their barracks in the Provincial Sports Complex in Barangay Bangkal, Patikul, Sulu, last July 15 by the ASG and threatened with beheading.

The three other workers who escaped last week were identified as Jason Pon Vailoces, Joel del Mesa Adanza and Filemon Francisco Guerrero Jr.

The three managed to escape after their families tricked their captors with fake money.

The ASG had threatened to behead the four construction workers if it did not receive a ransom of P3 million.

The Philippine government has a policy of not paying ransom to Islamist militants, including the ASG. (SunStar Philippines)
