Repair of dilapidated children's park in Burnham sought

BAGUIO City Councilor Maylen Yaranon has proposed a resolution requesting the City Environment and Parks Management Office (Cepmo) to regularly maintain and replace dilapidated facilities at the children’s playground as it poses danger to kids.

“The facilities at the children’s playground are damaged or dilapidated through the years because of wear and tear and exposure of rain and sunlight,” Yaranon said.

Viral photos of the playground have been a topic of debate in social media where parents and residents have sounded the alarm bells for the area.

Facilities such as slides, swings, parallel bars attract the attention of children and they run towards these facilities leaving their parents or guardians behind unknowing of the accident.

“These dilapidated facilities can cause injury to playing children especially when the child is not accompanied by a parent or guardian,” Yaranon added.

The playground is an iconic spot for local and visitors alike with the twin elephant still standing as a testament of the Filipino–Chinese friendship.

The entire park is designed by American architect Daniel Burnham and has become one of the city’s top destinations for locals and tourists alike.

Yaranon said committee on tourism chairman and councilor Elmer Datuin said an agreement with a mall in the city has put in features to the park but he remains unsure if the pact includes maintenance of facilities.

The Cepmo is primarily responsible for the maintenance of the children’s playground.

It was in 2009 when the park was last rehabilitated.
