Salubre, Magbanua bag chess titles in Davao

JAYSON Salubre and Wesley Jovan Magbanua clinched titles at the close of the 7th APM Open and Kiddies Christmas Rapid chess tournament held at the Market Basket Damosa, Lanang in Davao City.

Salubre tallied a total of 6.5 points in the seven-round Swiss System format chessfest to take home the top cash prize of P4,000 donated by Jubrealle88 Fashion Bags.

He outclassed Carl Zirex Sato (6.0) and Harison Maamo (6.0) who placed second and third, respectively.

Sato pocketed P2,000 while Maamo got P1,000.

Magbanua, an 11-year-old Los Amigos Elementary School student, scored perfect seven points to annex the kiddies title over Marc Lawrence Unday (6.0), Gabriel John Umayan (5.0) and Samantha Umayan (4.0) who took the next three places.

Magbanua went home with P700 while Unday, Gabriel and Samantha received P500, P400 and P300, respectively.

Magbanua recently competed in the Batang Pinoy 2016 National Championships. He will also see action in the Davao Regional Athletic Association Meet 2017.

Special awards were given to Zsuzsa Tabudlong (best female), Exiquila Apao (second best female), Japhet Aaron Caresosa (top 14 and under), Gino Angelo Asuncion (top junior) and Ramil Langamon (top 1950).
