Sanchez: K-9

NOW this makes a lot of sense in the government’s anti-drug war. Chief Superintendent Renato Gumban wants the Negros Island Philippine National Police (PNP) to have K9 units to help fight illegal drugs.

It seems the only that uses canines are the Philippine Coast Guard and the Bacolod-Silay Airport’s Aviation Security Group.

“We are currently asking the higher-ups in Camp Crame to introduce K9 units to regional (police) offices to help combat illegal drug smuggling at ports,” said Gumban.

K9 units consist of a canine trained to sniff and locate bombs and illegal drugs.

During the Grand Feast of the Light of Jesus Family, the Bacolod City Police Office deployed K-9 units to sniff at the throng of Christian worshippers. There were rumors that Islamic terrorist groups might bomb the mall venue. The Belgian Malinois dogs might look bored, but I’m sure they would have jumped to action if they smell anything fishy.

Most of us dog owners look at our furbabies as pets. In fact, the province has the Knine Obedience Club of Negros Occidental whose goals, among others, is to teach dog owners on the importance of treating pets as part of the family. Safe and Responsible Socialization with young kids and their canine companions.

It’s different, however, with working dogs not to be part of the family. Emotional bonding between humans and animal is not a factor for choosing the breed.

In Metro Manila, the Asonial-K9 raises quality working dogs that currently serve as patrol dogs, personal protection dogs, search and rescue, home defense and companion dogs to some local and mostly international clients, in Asian countries, the United States, and Canada.

The company breeds, train, restore and the preserve true working dogs suitable for civilian and home defense patrol and guard work search and rescue companion.

Not all dogs are equal. Working security dogs include the Giant Schnauzer, intimidating not only because of its size, but its menacing bark and fierce bite. Then there’s the Akita, German Shepherd, and the guard dog Chow-chow, once used to guard the great palaces of Asia.

Another top security dog is the Chinese Shar-Pei that was bred as a watch dog, protect flock, and kill vermin. A Doberman pincher is enough to scare the living daylights out of intruders. Rottweiler? Sweet and easy going with his family but can act mean like it means it.

Good luck to the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region. I’ve seen how these canine works in airports and ports of entry. Their acquisition will be worth their weight in gold.
