Santiago wants inquiry on delayed road projects

SENATOR Miriam Defensor Santiago has filed a resolution seeking to conduct an inquiry on the alleged delays in the construction of government roads.

She said the inquiry is needed to solve what caused the delays on the road projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

"Congress, in exercising the power of the purse, should put in place measures to ensure that funds disbursed for roads and public works are appropriately used," Santiago said.

The Manila Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reportedly asked the DPWH to explain the delays in the long overdue road projects that lead to traffic congestion.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino earlier said the delays aggravated traffic jams in Manila and have made roads unavailable for use as Christmas and Mabuhay lanes, which serve as alternate routes during heavy traffic season.

He said that some of the projects should have been accomplished during the second and third quarters of 2014. (Sunnex)
