Saycon, Carrion join Edsa commission

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has named two members of the five-man Edsa People Power Commission currently headed by National Historical Commission of the Philippines chairperson Rene Escalante.

MalacaƱang on Wednesday, January 24, released the appointment papers of Pastor Saycon and Christopher Carrion, designating them as the new members of the Edsa People Power Commission.

Saycon and Carrion's appointment papers were signed by the President on January 18.

Duterte has yet to appoint two other members of the commission.

Saycon, secretary general of Council for Philippine Affairs, was controversial for accusing then-ruling party Liberal Party of rigging the results of the May 9, 2016 national elections.

Saycon also had a role in the ouster of former president and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada. He served as a member of Edsa People Power Commission under the Arroyo administration.

The commission was created through Executive Order (EO) 82 signed in 1999 by Estrada.

The commission was originally composed of 25 members but under Duterte's EO 47 signed on November 24, 2017, the number of members was trimmed down to five.

The Edsa People Power Commission was tasked to initiate activities that will expand awareness about Edsa People Power Revolution; plan and implement the annual commemoration of the 1986 Edsa Revolution every February 25; and submit regular reports to the President.
