Senator recognizes war vets’ sacrifices, heroism

CAPAS — “We will always treasure your sacrifices and heroism.”

This was the message of Senator Bam Aquino as he led the remembrance ceremony for the Filipino and American soldiers who were part of the infamous 1942 Death March at Capas National Shrine.

Aquino said today is the perfect time to reminisce and thank the World War II veterans, who brawled into cruel battles to liberate the country from invaders who once stole its sovereignty.

“If it’s not because of their gallantry and bravery, we are still victims and prisoners of foreign aggressors. But because of their sacrifices and courageousness, we become independent Filipinos, free from cruelty and death,” he added.

Noting Rizal’s faith to the hope of the Fatherland, the first termer legislator encouraged the youth to advocate unity and nation building, as the country faced a different kind of battle afflicted by poverty, ignorance, and lack of education.

“Our veteran grandfathers know their opponents during the World War II battle –the foreign intruders. With unity and courage at hand, they were able to surpass and win the war. Today, I hope we do the same as we face the fight against corruption, poverty, and terrorism,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mayor TJ Rodriguez said the annual observance in Capas town was conceived not only to remind Filipinos of the supreme sacrifices of the veterans, but also to serve as an inspiration for the youth in appreciating freedom that the country is enjoying today.

"The best way to thank the bravery of our veterans is to do the best we can to preserve peace and attain full development of our communities," he added.

Paggunita sa Capas serves as one of the highlights of the annual commemoration of Philippine Veterans Week.

Recognitions were given to living veterans Col. Vicente Balbin, 1Lt. Candido Guiam Jr., Pvt. Macario Ilaga, Pvt. Felix Valdez, and Cpl. Fortunato Villanueva.

This year’s observance is guided by the theme “Ipunla ang Kagitingan sa Kabataan, Ihanda ang Beterano ng Kinabukasan.” (CLJD/LGCC-PIA 3)
