Serna: Missing Martin Nievera’s ballads

IT HAS been a long time since I last heard an original composition interpreted by Martin Nievera. So when I first caught the first bar of a song and its familiar voice, I was immediately fascinated.

But I later realized that the message was serious and not the usual lyrics of a love song. It turned out to be the jingle of a government-owned banking institution.

It’s so clever for the bank’s think tank to tap Martin to interpret the song. If it is Martin’s own composition, I’m giving the concert king two thumbs up.

He should put aside reviving classics and go back to writing and interpreting beautiful ballads.

The unplanned bonding moment with fellow Provincial Information Office employees Hearty Rizarri, Cris Lanie delos Reyes, Stanley Cin Libor, Francis Nacua and Junlee dela Cerna happened on the second to the last day of showing of The Love Affair.

Special thanks to promo diva Josie Pereyra for the rare opportunity.

A last-minute announcement of a meeting threatened the gathering, but fortunately, it was adjourned just in time to complete the cast for the movie viewing. We were unanimous in saying that the movie gathered a formidable cast of good actors to portray a story that was not usually shown on the wide screen.

Dawn Zulueta, Bea Alonzo and Richard Gomez, being the leads, have many acting highlights all throughout the movie. The supporting cast also had their shining moments like Ana Capri, Ina Feleo, Al Tantay, Jane Oineza and newcomer Grae Fernandez.

Techie Agbayani’s role didn’t have a demanding moment that can showcase her thespic talent. Of the entire cast, Pinoy Big Brother ex-housemate Manolo Pedrosa stood out like a sore thumb as he was unable to deliver what was expected of him.

In a scene where Grae Fernandez had a heavy dramatic scene with Dawn as his mother, Manolo couldn’t even project a sad face. He kept closing his eyes as if begging for his tear glands to produce the much-needed tears but was turned down. Sad.

For me, he has the eyes, though not necessarily at par with those of Nora Aunor, that could be used to their full advantage. Although his Maalaala Mo Kaya portrayal last Saturday of a gay young man who fell in love with a girl was not bad, still, that role was not really an acting vehicle.

Hopefully, he will exert effort to improve his craft so as not to disappoint movie and television enthusiasts any further in future assignments.

By the way, Star Cinema does not rest on its laurels just because a recent project has attracted hordes of movie fanatics. Right after The Love Affair, another project comes our way with Derek Ramsay, Meg Imperial and Coleen Garcia in the lead roles.

This is in the movie Ex With Benefits. The play date is Sept. 2. Mark your calendars.

Better late than never. I sought the help of YouTube to keep me abreast with the trending AlDub Kalyeserye that has been sweeping the country like wildfire.

Workload, intermittent field assignments and the time slot prevented me from viewing Eat Bulaga where a considerable time has been allotted for the kalyeserye that has entertained televiewers nationwide.

I still have more episodes to catch up, but at least, I’m not that far behind anymore. Whew!
