Seven-vehicle smash-up leaves 1 dead, 4 others hurt

A 59-YEAR-OLD woman was killed while four people were hurt when a minibus rammed six vehicles in Barangay Tunghaan, Minglanilla last Saturday afternoon.

Crisanta Abregonde, 59, a resident of Tres de Abril St. in Cebu City, was waiting for a jeepney when the bus hit her.

A minibus, driven by Federico Cudiman, 48, was speeding toward the south when the brakes of the vehicle malfunctioned.

Cudiman’s minibus accidentally hit a tricycle driven by Alberto Abadiez Jr., 36. His wife Naomi, 34, and their 11-year-old daughter were in the tricycle. 

Due to the impact, Abadiez lost control of the tricycle and hit a parked multicab owned by Geronimo Caparida. A south-bound pick-up truck driven by Victor dela Cruz was also hit by Abadiez’s tricycle.

Aside from the tricycle, Cudiman’s minibus also hit another multicab owned by Robert Aliponga and a motorcycle driven by Jomar Repleso.

Cudiman tried to avoid hitting more vehicles by swerving to the right but he hit Abregonde, who just standing on the sidewalk.

Abregonde, Repleso, Abadiez, his wife and daughter were immediately brought to the South General Hospital in Naga City, but Abregonde died due to severe injuries.

PO1 Taher Radiab of the Minglanilla Police Station said that Cudiman surrendered to the police immediately after the incident. 

Cudiman is detained at the town’s detention cell and will face complaints for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and damage to property.
