Sevillano, Velarde top Chess Festival

CEBU’S next chess masters Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano and John Jerish Velarde ruled the high school and elementary divisions of the Robinsons Chess Festival 2014 last weekend at the Robinsons Mall Fuente.

National Master Rogelio Enriquez Jr. topped the Open Division Blitz Competition after scoring 4.5 points and after besting Vincent Balena in the tie-break points.

Sevillano won the high school division after scoring 4.0 points in five rounds.

It was actually a four-way logjam in the first to fourth places as Chris Aldritz Pondoyo, Vic Glexan Derotas and Felix Shaun Balbona also had 4.0 points each.

But Sevillano got the highest tie-break points on his way to bagging the P3,000 cash prize and the champion’s trophy. Pondoyo settled for second place, Derotas came in third and Balbona settled for fourth place.

Completing the 20 finalists were Ryan Pacres, Jeff Durog, Marc Bryan Villarojo, Duane Borgonia, John Arvert Cadiz and Jeremy Pepito (3.0 points); Laila Nadera (2.5); Vic Glysen Derotas, Adrian Basilgo, Gabriel Lastimosa, Michael Gocotano (2.0); Christine Lyka Pondoyo, James Andrew Balbona and Leo Angelo Nuñez (1.5) and J. Luego and Miguel Tequillo.

Velarde, meanwhile, allowed a draw in his five games in the finals to be the solo Elementary Division champion with 4.5 points to go home with the P3,000 cash prize and the champion’s trophy in the Elementary Division.

Jave Mareck Peteros (4.0 points) claimed the second place, while Alphard Gonzales came in third (3.5).
