THE City Government of San Fernando on Monday, April 16, launched the “Shoot that Bottle” campaign designed to strengthen its ecological solid waste management and reduce the adverse effects of climate change.
Part of the celebration of Earth Month this April, “Shoot that Bottle” was initiated by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) to promote the importance of recycling and segregation by collecting PET bottles inside a metal bin which was donated by Our Lady of Fatima University here.
The collected bottles will then be sold and the proceeds will be intended for various environmental projects of the city. Officials have also written their commitments for the environment on a pledge board which will be published on the official Facebook page of Cenro.
Both the “Shoot that Bottle” bin and pledge board will be publicly displayed in front of the city hall until April 30.
Mayor Edwin Santiago encouraged every Fernandino to join the city’s movements towards the preservation and protection of the environment to reduce vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change.
“The city government believes that saving the environment is a continuous and shared mission that’s why we are active in holding different green activities all year round to remind everyone about the urgent need to care for the Earth. By doing this, we also save our lives and that of the future generations,” he said.
Strengthening solid waste management
Santiago said that to further promote and implement the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act or Republic Act 9003 which calls for the systematic management of garbage towards a healthy environment, the City Government through its Centro continuously conducts meetings and orientation on solid waste management in various subdivisions and villages across the city.
Over the weekend, the Cenro and Santiago brought the campaign to residents of St. Francis Village here, where the best practices towards zero waste and the various environmental programs and policies being implemented by the local government were discussed.
Highlights of the discussion included the proper implementation and importance of Ecological Solid Waste Management where residents of the said subdivision were taught on the proper segregation and collection of waste. The orientation also served as a venue for the residents to raise their concerns regarding environmental issues.
Santiago said that in order to achieve a green, sustainable and livable city, it must start by protecting and saving the environment.
“We bring this program and campaign to Fernandinos so they will be aware of the importance of preserving and protecting the environment for a sustainable San Fernando,” Santiago said. (JTD)
