SHS to hold St. Ignatius Run

TO HELP educate the runners on the pros and cons of the sport, the St. Ignatius Run will have a short talk after their event on July 31 at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Campus in Canduman.

Race organizer Jose Vicente Cañizares decided to hold a talk after running veteran Dr. Yong Larrazabal III urged organizers to help educate the runners.

That suggestion came after a runner was killed after joining the Energizer Run last Saturday.

“However, we are already educating our young runners about the benefits of running and the proper way to run through the school’s scout masters,” said co-organizer Joshua Pritchard during the group’s press conference at the Baseline Restaurant yesterday.

The race will feature the 10K, 5K, 3K divisions and a 400-meter dash exclusively for the Grade 3 to 6 pupils of the school.

They will also have a separate 10K division exclusively for the school’s alumni.

“The elementary participants will be running around the rubberized track and field of SHS-Ateneo de Cebu. They will be competing inside the campus for safety and security reasons,” Canizares said.

Though there is another run scheduled on Aug. 1, Cañizares is confident they can draw at least 1,000 runners.

“Larrazabal, an alumnus of SHS, and his batch have already confirmed their participation. We are counting our fellow alumni to be apart of this momentous occasion,” Canizares said.

The event is in line with the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the patron saint and founder of the Jesuit community.

Early bird registration is P250 and the cut-off date is July 20. Late registrants will pay P300. Runners can sign up at the Cebu City Sports Center, Citigym, Holiday Spa, Nike BTC branch and Runnr .
