Silliman University braces for possible faculty strike

DUMAGUETE CITY -- Silliman University (SU) here is taking adaptive measures in the event of a faculty strike by union members who have been in a deadlock with management over issues involving their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Mark Raygan Garcia, SU Director of the Office of Information and Publications, said they are anticipating the possibility of some faculty not making themselves available for teaching as early as July 5.

In an interview Tuesday evening, Garcia said there are about 400 university faculty but could not say how many members of the Silliman University Faculty Association (SUFA) would be going on strike.

Earlier on Tuesday, the university issued a statement on measures being undertaken in the event of a strike.

“The University is ensuring that such development will not compromise learning opportunities for our students and the purpose for which parents have entrusted their children to Silliman”, the statement said.

“Adaptive measures are in place to facilitate the reorganization and reconstitution of classes when and if a strike is staged”, it added.

Among the measures include monitoring of classes to determine which ones have or not have teachers, while creative teaching modalities will be implemented in the affected classes, the university administration said.

Related advisories will be issued regularly via the university’s website and social media accounts and through friends in the local media.

Garcia disclosed one of the unresolved issues brought to the negotiating table is the salaries of the faculty. (PNA)
