Sky Waterpark in Cebu nears completion

A FILIPINO-Korean company is investing $2 million for the development of a sky waterpark in Cebu, reportedly the first in the country.

Expected to be operational in February 2016, Skywaterpark Cebu of DSNP Corp. will sit on a 4,200-square meter leased space at the sixth floor roofdeck of the J Centre Mall in Mandaue City.

The waterpark, according to DSNP marketing director Bing B. Torre, will be a new addition to Cebu’s urban tourist spots. They aim to attract Cebuanos, domestic and foreign visitors.

Waterparks are popular in Asian countries like Japan and Korea and developers hope Cebuanos will embrace it, too.

Amenities

Resort features include a water playground with pool and a water house with interactive water elements as well as an island and infinity pool with jacuzzi, resting decks, a dining and entertainment area, a gift shop, spa, and concessionaire outlets.

Operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and until 2 a.m. on weekends.

Developers see it as an ideal location for social functions, corporate gatherings and special events.

Upon completion, this will be the second resort-type development in the city after the Westown Lagoon in the Mandaue Reclamation Area. Skywaterpark Cebu can accommodate 500 to 600 people “conservatively and comfortably”.

Complementary

While this is purely a waterpark development, guests can stay at the adjacent Toyoko Inn Hotel that is located on the same level. The Japanese-run business hotel will have 583 rooms and is slated to open in April 2016.

“Skywaterpark Cebu is an alternative to resort activities that are located outside the city,” Torre said. This might be a new concept now, but she expects this to become a trend in the near future. Skywaterpark Cebu is 30 to 40 minutes away from the Mactan Cebu International Airport.

Other developments, she observed, already incorporated sky parks or sky gardens, such as the SM Seaside City.

Rates for Skywaterpark Cebu, according to Torre, will not go over P1,000.

Children below four years old will be free of charge.

Located in an open-air space six-storeys above the ground, guests have panoramic views of the cities of Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, and Cebu.

Background

Torre said expanding Skywaterpark in other locations in the country is a possibility.

DSNP Corp.’s management has experience in leisure developments. The general manager of Imperial Palace, Simon Yang, sits as the vice president of DSNP. Mother compay Daedong Corp. in Korea has been in the stoneworks business for 70 years, exporting marble and tiles to Europe.
