SMB vows to plant trees on flood-prone areas

SOME areas in Davao City are prone to flood. We may remember on June 2011, tropical storm “Falcon” hit Matina Pangi. Many families left their residence from fear of losing whatever they have left from the disaster.

To help lessen the problem, San Miguel Brewery (SMB) Inc. conducted an annual tree planting activity Buhayin ang Kalikasan CSR program. SMB is committed to provide a responsible stewardship for the environment by planting different varieties of trees near rivers and landslide prone areas.

SMB’s tree planting activity began last 2013 and is currently on their fifth year.

SMB estimated to have planted almost 5,000 trees in different areas of Davao City. This year’s goal is to plant and grow 2,200 Malibago, Narra, Mahogany, and Sagimsim seedlings.

The beneficiary of these 2,200 seedlings is the area of Asico, km. 6.5 Matina Pangi, Davao City. SMB officials, Sunstar Davao employees, and other volunteers were greeted by their barangay captain Carmelo Arana where he shared his memories of the typhoon and how badly they want it not happen again.

Since most of the participants are not into planting, Mr. Chris Asibal, Cenro Chief Environment Management Specialist provides a brief orientation on the proper handling and planting of plants.

To celebrate the success of planting, the participants enjoyed a lunch at Penong’s Matina Gallera. Though our bodies were sweating, we didn’t mind thinking we did something for the environment. (Julie Anne Dumalag)
