Social welfare office eyes release of elderly pension

QUALIFIED senior citizens could expect a representative from the Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost) to knock at their door for their third quarter pension anytime this month.

According to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Revenue Regulations No. 7-2010, qualified senior citizens are senior citizens qualified by the Commissioner of Internal Revenue or his duly authorized representative by submitting a certified true copy of his Senior Citizen Identification Card (Osca ID) issued by the Osca of the city or municipality where he resides.

Gretchen Anne Taleon, social worker II assigned at the Social Pension Program, said they have already transferred P89.538 million to Philpost for the door-to-door delivery of the three-month pension equivalent to P1,500 each for the 59,692 qualified senior citizens in Western Visayas.

She added the P609,000 pension of 406 pensioners in Caluya island in Antique was released through cash advance to their recipients last week while that of Negros Occidental’s P27,912,000 for 18,608 pensioners was transferred to their local government unit.

DSWD has tapped Philpost to deliver the social pension of the elderly.

Taleon said the pension, which covers July, August and September, was a bit delayed due to transition. Previously, pension was downloaded to local government units.

Negros Occidental, however, was done through a fund transfer following its separation from Western Visayas due to the creation of the Negros Island Region (NIR).

Caluya Island is difficult to reach due to its geographical location.

Philpost will be reaching out to 9,843 qualified senior citizens in Aklan, 9,169 in Antique except Caluya, 10,498 in Capiz, 27,424 in Iloilo, and 2,758 in Guimaras.

A total of P14,764,500 will be delivered to Aklan, P13,753,500 to Antique, P15,747,000 for Capiz, P41,136,000 for Iloilo, and P4,137,000 for Guimaras.

She added they hoped to see Philpost complete the delivery within this month. (PNA)
