A MAN believed to be mentally-ill killed his own mother and ate some of her body parts inside their house at Barangay Bolocboloc in Sibulan, Negros Oriental Monday morning, August 28.
The fatality was identified as Josefina Barrera Manaban, 86.
Senior Inspector Nelson Lamoco, town police chief, said Roger Manaban, 52, came to his mother’s house around 7:50 a.m. and stabbed the victim to death using a 10-inch kitchen knife.
The victim shouted for help, prompting her neighbors to call for assistance from the village watchmen. The responders failed to enter the house because the door was locked.
Policemen arrived and saw that the suspect was vomiting. They negotiated with the suspect, but he tried to escape. Policemen went after him and eventually hit him with a wood to neutralize him. He was then arrested.
The victim succumbed to 14 stab wounds. Her stomach was ripped open and her eye was removed.
Lamoco said the suspect, who came from Pamplona town, with no permanent address, seems to be possessed because he was acting like he was out of his mind.
He did not respond to his siblings when they asked him why he killed their mother, Lamoco added.
The police chief said the suspect’s siblings claimed that he was mentally-ill. He underwent treatment in a mental institution last year.
However, they believe that he was also influenced by illegal drugs, Lamoco said.
The suspect will be subjected to a drug test on Tuesday, August 29. He is detained at the station and facing parricide charges.
