Stability of Araneta-Magsaysay flyover questioned

BACOLOD City Councilor Ricardo Tan urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), City Engineer’s Office (CEO), and the office of Congressman Greg Gasataya to conduct an inspection, re-assessment, and evaluation of the structural stability of the Araneta-Magsaysay flyover.

Tan, who authored a resolution for the purpose passed on Wednesday, said that a portion of the flyover becomes unstable when a certain number of vehicles pass in the area.

u201cA portion of the flyover shakes and many have noticed it when they pass through the flyover,” he said.

It has been observed by many commuters, vehicle owners, and drivers that given a certain load, the flyover unreasonably shakes thereby, frightening drivers and passengers, the councilor added.

u201cFor the sake of public safety and to ease up the commuting public, it becomes imperative that a certain team of structural engineers and other experts, specifically from the DPWH as well as of the CEO should be requested or commissioned to test and check the structural integrity of the flyover,” Tan said.

The flyover was inaugurated by DPWH Secretary Mark Villar last December 19.

The Araneta Street-Magsaysay Avenue flyover, located in the southern part of Bacolod, has a total project cost of P365 million, which was converted into economic construction cost of P321.2 million, using the standard economic conversion factors. (MAP/CNC)
