Stadium ‘a requirement’ for SRP lot buy

WHOEVER buys the 26.3-hectare lot at the South Road Properties (SRP) currently occupied by the San Pedro Calungsod templete may have to build a stadium in the area at no cost to the Cebu City Government.

This will be among the provisions that will be placed in the terms of reference for

the lot’s sale.

This was disclosed by former city councilor and lawyer Jose Daluz III, committee on awards chief.

Almost finished

“We are almost done with the terms of reference. Whoever purchases the lot should put up an arena, free of cost to the City. That’s one of the conditions because the mayor wants an arena at the SRP,” he said.

Daluz said they are targeting to finish the terms of reference within the month and submit these to the City Council for approval.

So far, two companies have expressed interest in buying the property: SM Prime Holdings Inc. and Robinsons Land.

No other proposals have been received by the City Government, Daluz said.

Last October, Mayor Michael Rama said he wanted a stadium to rise at the SRP that can host international events and sports tournaments.

His announcement came several days after a near commotion at the Cebu Coliseum during a basketball championship game.

Specifications

The mayor said the commotion was due to the overcrowding, something which could be avoided if the city has a stadium.

Rama said he wanted a stadium that can be converted into function areas like the one in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

He also said it should be able to accommodate 40,000 persons.

Asked what will happen after the council approves the terms of reference, Daluz said they will request for a public sale of the lot that will pave way for the public bidding.
