Sum-ag in third place over Banago, 108-89

IT WAS raining three points shots and after the thunderstorm, Sum-ag finally rested with a 108-89 win over Banago good for third place in the first Congressman Greg Gasataya Cup held at STI West Negros University gym in Bacolod City.

In Game 1 of the best-of-three final series, Villamonte took the edge for Sunday's Game 2 with a convincing 110-100 triumph over Singcang Destroyer, a monicker to honor former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) star Rudy Distrito.

It took three ties at 9-9, 13-13 and 18-18 before Villamonte took the first canto, 24-22. With height advantage used against speed, the Homesite dribblers led 55-44 at halftime.

Singcang through Mustangs Renz Solomon and Gee Adjie recovered in the third canto, tied 69-all and led 71-69 with 2:50 left in the period only to see it slip away as Villamonte recoved for a 78-74 lead going to the payoff period.

The Destroyers came close again at 90-93 with 4:34 remaining but a 9-2 spurt by Villamonte made it 102-92 score with 3:32 left and garbage time followed until the final bell.

In Game 2, Singcang survived the hard fighting Villamonte, 89-97 to extend the series to a rubber match. (HGD)
