Tabuk City loses P1B to Lawin

TABUK CITY, Kalinga -- The province’s capital suffered heavy brunt from super typhoon ‘Lawin’ whine it battered parts of north Luzon last month and left more than P1 billion worth of damages to agriculture and infrastructure.

Reports from the City Office on Agricultural Services revealed at least 87.5 hectares of ready-to-harvest rice were covered by aggregates and siltation from flooding worth P454,908,675.

Sudaypan Dacay-og, a farmer in the city said about half of the more than 100 hectares of rice in their area that would have been harvested in six weeks were totally destroyed.

Corn farmers reported a loss of P97,656,000 while estimated damage of high value commercial crops that include coffee, fruit trees and vegetables was at P420, 127,590.

Fisher folk estimated their loss at P 2,911,999 while livestock losses were recorded at P 4,123,250. The cost of damage to government infrastructure facilities was placed at P60, 985,800.

Tabuk City reported zero-casualty from the super typhoon.

CDRRMO Christian Luyaben said there were 1,876 families living in high-risk areas who were transferred to various evacuation centers during the force evacuation on October 19.

From the 42 barangays of Tabuk, 11,008 families were directly affected.

Relief goods from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and local government had been distributed to affected families, Luyaben reported. (Larry Lopez/PIA–CAR)
