Tancontian captures Batang Pinoy judo gold medal

TAGUM CITY -- Multi-athlete Sydney Sy Tancontian of Davao City added another feather on her cap as she bagged a gold medal Monday, November 28, in the Batang Pinoy 2016 National Championships judo tournament at the New Tagum City Hall here.

Tancontian, a 16-year-old University of Santo Tomas (UST) student, took down Barsaga twice in the girls +70 kilogram weight division.

Tancontian scored an ippon over Barsaga using a tai o toshi technique in their first encounter. The Dabawenya subdued the latter again in their second clash using a seoinage technique to claim her seventh gold in the history of the Batang Pinoy.

Tancontian, in an interview with SunStar Davao, said she felt privileged to represent the city where she started her athletic career.

"Davao City has always been the home of the champions," she said, citing the family's expertise in judo.

"Nasa dugo na din kasi namin at syempre si Papa nag-train," she said, pertaining to her father Paolo Tancontian, a former national team mainstay and is a fourth dan judoka.

When asked to compare her experiences in the Batang Pinoy and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), Tancontian said she was a lot more nervous playing in UAAP since it was her first time to compete. She, however, was more eager to win in Batang Pinoy as she will be representing her home city. She recently clinched a UAAP judo gold.

She will compete in the wrestling event Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Davao City's Christel Daisy Aseneta captured the girls 32 kg silver as Charles Yap seized the boys 42 kg bronze.
