Teenager commits suicide after caught cheating in exam

A 16-YEAR-OLD girl, a consistent honor student, committed suicide by hanging herself using a blanket on Monday afternoon, after she was caught by her teacher cheating during a test in a village in Argao, Cebu.

The investigation of Women and Children's Protection Desk (WCPD), however, found out that the eleventh grader had a history of depression and attempted to commit suicide last year.

Senior Police Officer 1 Vivian Tamayo, Argao WCPD chief, said the girl told her daughter that she wanted to take her own life because of family problems, following the suicide of their classmate in August last year.

"The girl came from a broken family. Her mother is reportedly working in Manila, while she has no communication with her father," she said.

Around 2:30 p.m., the girl was caught cheating by her teacher, who confiscated her test paper. The girl went out of the classroom and did not return for another test at 3 p.m.

Tamayo said the girl wrote the possible answers in her palm.

"The girl possibly failed to study because of her problems," she said.

The girl was found in the comfort room by the owner of the boarding house where she rented a room at 4:30 p.m. She was rushed to a public hospital in Argao where she was declared dead.

In Barangay Cabanua, Argao, a man was found dead in the irrigation canal on the same day. The body of Bernandino Cartila, 38, was found in Sitio Luwak, Barangay Canbanua around 8 a.m. He was last seen reportedly drunk last Sunday night.
