That good ol’ Spanish pastry

DID churros really originate in Spain? Some say it was the brainchild of Spanish shepherds and some say the churros was brought to Europe by the Portuguese from China. Some call it tejeringos or calentitos, but most of us only know it as churros.

I say wherever it came from or whatever it’s called, I’m glad the good ol’ pastry dough opened a store dedicated to churros in the Philippines in 2014. Three years after, La Lola Churreria opened its first store in Mindanao at the SM Lanang Premier. That’s where you need to go for your churros fix.

The churreria’s offerings come in a variety—the classic with dips sold separately (matcha, signature and dark chocolate); choco churros (churros coated in dark, matcha, butterscotch and white chocolates); churro ice cream sandwich; the xuxus (stuffed churros); and the savory churros.

If you’re a fan at first bite, then there’s a reason to go back and try one variant per visit until you spot your favorites.

Flying to town on grand opening day were Dani Aliaga, Maria Perin, and celebrity couple Nico Bolzico and Solenn Heussaff.

When asked why naming the store La Lola, Dani Aliaga replied, “Lola is a common name in Spain and in the Philippines lola (grandmother) is always correlated with love and happiness, and that’s how we prepare our churro.”

La Lola wants to spread happiness one churro at a time. Their products are made from scratch with the best ingredients, cooked fresh upon order and fried in 100 percent olive oil.

“We designed our churros as an awesome treat perfect for sharing.”

As much as the churreria wants to bring chocolatey smiles for everyone, I like my churros as simple as it can get, with cinnamon and sugar. That’s not on the board but they’ll gladly prepare it when requested. That made me happy. I’m sure Manny and Jinky Pacquaio with their big group were happy with their choice of churros as well.
