Top cop vows probe into priest’s death

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Police Regional Office Central Luzon Director Amador Corpus ordered a thorough investigation on the untimely death of a retired Catholic priest in Jaen, Nueva Ecija, recently.

Activist priest Fr. Marcelito “Tito” Paez, 72, was shot by still unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen as he was driving through Sitio Sangalang in Barangay Lambakin in Jaen town on Monday night, December 4.

Paez, who was reportedly driving his Toyota Innova when the gunmen blocked his path and open fired at his vehicle, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds in the body. He was brought to the Gonzales General Hospital in San Leonardo town.

Corpus said he already called for an in-depth probe into the death of Paez and assured the total commitment of the whole Central Luzon police force in solving such incident.

He said a task force was formed to look into the murder of Paez and investigators are already looking into the victim’s profile and background, which could provide clues on the people who wanted the retired priest dead.

“I guarantee that your police will leave no stone unturned and will exert all means to get to the bottom of this very unfortunate incident,” he said in a statement.

Corpus also asked the support of the general public in providing justice for Paez and his bereaved family and friends, as well as their cooperation in maintaining peace and order in the region.
