Tornado leaves P4.17 million in damage

THE tornado that ripped through Manapla town in Negros Occidental the other day left an estimated damage of more than P4 million to houses and structures.

The tornado, which lasted for 15 to 20 minutes, destroyed four houses and damaged 82 others when it hit Barangay 1-A at around 12:45 p.m.

The tornado, which injured two people, also damaged the barangay covered court, church, and Project Dungganon center.

The strong winds from the tornado also toppled down some trees and blown off roofs of houses and structures.

Fritzie Matunding, administrative and training officer of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said the estimated worth of damage to houses was pegged at P2.67 million while they have yet to compute the estimated damage for the other structures.

He said the initial estimation for the damage of the covered court was at P1.5 million although they are still waiting for the official figure from the Municipal Engineer’s Office.

Matunding said that almost 70 percent of the covered court was destroyed.

He added that the Municipal Government had already extended relief assistance to the affected families.
