True measure of love is sacrifice: Palma

CEBU Archbishop Jose Palma urged the faithful to show love this Valentines Day by sacrificing for others.

“The true gauge of love is the willingness to even sacrifice for those we love,” Palma told reporters.

Palma, who presided a pontifical mass at the Sto. Niño Parish in Mojon, Talisay City, said that true love is not just to feel love but the willingness to give love for others.

He lamented that nowadays, young people and those seeking lifetime partners only try to show and give love based on emotion.

“Love can fluctuate if it is based on emotion. You feel this way today, but we may feel different tomorrow. Sometimes it happens even when you are already married,” Palma said.

He advised couples to sustain love by putting God in the center of their relationship.

“If atong kaugalingon lamang ang atong saligan (If we only rely on ourselves), we will run out of love, kay tawhanon man kita nga nag-usab-usab ang atong (because we’re human and we change our) feelings and sentiments. But if our love is sustained by the love of the Lord, bisag if musakrispisyo ta (even if we make sacrifices), it will never run out,” Palma said.
