UNDEREMPLOYMENT rate in Eastern Visayas has increased from 26 percent in 2015 to 29.6 percent this year, making it the third highest in the country, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda).
Underemployment remains a weakness of the region as it becomes high and stagnant, having a record of more than 25 percent.
From April to June 2016, unemployment rate slightly went up to 27.2 percent from 27 percent in the same period last year.
By definition, employed persons who express the desire to have additional hours of work in their present job, or to have additional job, or to have a new job with longer working hours are considered underemployed.
“More people become underemployed mainly because of not earning enough to pay for the basic needs, or because of job mismatch,” the Neda said in a statement.
According to Neda, reducing the underemployment rate of the region is challenging. Underemployment is another problem that requires special attention besides unemployment.
Neda, however, is optimistic that underemployment problem will be addressed with the preparation of the regional development plan, which seeks to raise the income of poor families. (PNA)
