UNIT 8 copped two gold medals in the just-concluded Davao City Athletic Association Meet 2016 Rapid Chess Tournament held at the Davao City National High School Main Library Wednesday, November 9.
Irish Yngayo and Jan Chelsie Mendoza topped the secondary girls and elementary girls chess events, respectively.
Yngayo edged out fellow four-pointer Honey Grace Buenafe of Unit 5 and Ellyz Blanche Bongato of Unit 6 via superior tie-breaks in the five round Swiss System Format event. Buenafe and Bongato placed second and third, respectively.
Mendoza also bested fellow four-pointer Samantha Umayan of Unit 1 and Jasmine Rei Amoncio Unit 6 via superior tiebreaks.
Kurt John Placencia of Unit 1, meanwhile, scored perfect five points to capture the elementary boys gold over Eric Yngayo Jr. of Unit 3 (4.0) and Bhing Joel Ghimony of Unit 5(4.0) who grabbed the next two places.
Wesley Jovan Magbanua of Unit 4 outclassed fellow 4.5 scorer Ryan Gabriel Rasay of Unit 3 via superior tiebreaks to clinch the High School boys gold. Rasay got the silver while John Dale Fernandez of Unit 3 took the bronze with four points.
