THE University of the Visayas (UV) and the Abellana National School topped the SBP 3X3 Pambansang Tatluhan Regional Finals 2016 at the Magis Arena of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) last Sunday.
UV-1 defeated Don Bosco (DB)-1, 12-10, to win the Boys Under-16 title.
DB-1 started out strong and opened up a 4-0 run to start the game. But ZJ Enriquez and Froiland Maglasang kept it close for UV-1.
Enriquez, who came off the bench, tied the game at 8-8. Maglasang gave UV-1 a two-point lead, 10-8, after scoring back-to-back baskets. Grenal Malubay, however, hit a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 10-10 with 40 seconds left.
Composure
Maglasang was cool and composed and hit two free throws to seal the game with four seconds remaining in regulation.
Maglasang led UV-1 with six points, while Enriquez added five. Malubay and John Michael Siacor had five point each for DB-1.
UV-1’s campaign wasn’t perfect and lost a game in the group stage before making a strong push where it mattered the most and eventually the championships.
DB-1 was very impressive the whole tournament, going unbeaten in the group stage and easily beating Medillin, 15-8, in the quarterfinals and SHS-AdC-1, 18-14, in the semi-finals.
The other members of the champion UV-1 team are Joshua Canoy and Osias Padilla.
SHS-AdC-1 grabbed third place honors with a 17-15 win over Lapu-Lapu.
Dominance
Abellana-1 totally obliterated Carmen, 19-7, to win the Girls Under-16 crown.
Abellana-1 shocked Carmen early on with a 10-2 lead. From then on, Abellana-1 never looked back.
Florence Jil Talas logged double figure scoring for Abellana-1 with 10 points, while Darliene Ragasajo added six. Yvonne Durias had three points for Carmen.
