Valladolid named pilot area for green township project

THE Municipality of Valladolid was declared pilot area for Visayas for the Green Township Project under the Village Eco-Governance Development Framework of the Presidential Commission on Urban Poor (PCUP) and the Climate Change Commission in rites held at the town plaza yesterday.

The declaration was made at the 1st General Assembly of the group Eco-Entrepreneurial Greens Communities Inc. (EEGCI) for the National Urban Poor Climate Change Adaptation Agenda attended by some 5,000 members from the Fourth District.

The EEGCI is the local steward for the program with its members as the beneficiaries of the “8 Doable Projects” of PCUP.

Commissioner for the Urban Poor Joan Lagunda, who spoke at the event, said the creation of community food gardens, creation of rain catchments, implementation of climate change adaptation and risk mitigation-proof housing projects, and creation of community-based waste energy projects were some of the eight doable projects to be done soon.

Lagunda said the program will seek allocation from the Local Climate Change Adaptation Program of the town to make the program more feasible.

The LGU and the EEGCI will work together and create a kind of intervention to promote livelihood and care for environment, she added.

For his part, Valladolid Mayor Enrique Miravalles said he was overwhelmed by the pronouncement of the PCUP.

“The project will propel the town to greatness,” the mayor said, adding that they will provide as soon as possible a piece of land for the Green Township Project.

He added that Lagunda promised to provide an allocation for the extension of the Valladolid covered court located inside the public plaza and the repair of the stage adjacent to it. (TDE)
