Value Focus Week 2 - Commitment/Dedication

COMMITMENT or dedication is a state of being devoted to a cause, activity, endeavor, etc. It is a very significant issue in this period of time because of volatile environment brought about by varied culture, fashion, and lifestyle of men, changing climatic and economic condition, and the fluctuating market supply and demand. All these factors affect the interest of every individual. However, the drive and pursuit can be made stable by a written mission and vision inscribed in the hearts of people.

Once a person owns the vision of a certain individual, organization, entity, or nation, he will pursue it diligently and stick to it. All the plans and actions of the person are therefore orchestrated and aligned towards the fulfillment of the mission and vision. This is the secret of commitment and dedication. One cannot be committed or dedicated to something without being engulfed by what he sees in the future.

The above principle also applies in a relationship. One cannot be committed to someone without being settled or resolved in his heart that he will be connected to this person for a lifetime. Based on these premises, there are underlying factors that sustain the commitment or dedication of a person. It could be a mission, vision, or resolution in the heart of a person. He must be preoccupied by it that his intentions and motives do not deviate from its fulfillment. His activities are so organized in such a way that it points towards the realization of what he determined to achieve or have. Even his ethical disposition is upgraded.

He honors his word and binds himself to undertake any transaction he entered into and to the terms he agreed on. He makes no second thought or alternative choices. He believes it is worth investing for.

The only reason why a person goes out of commitment or dedication is when he loses the hope of a better future. There he forgets his oaths. His tenacity to win gradually vanishes and the fire within him is quenched.

The best of life he previously imagined is clouded by stumbling blocks that relentlessly confronts him. “Ningas kugon” as commonly described. It is like a controversial issue in the media industry that was made sensational for a time being and the commitment or dedication to address the matter is also temporary. It is only to market the problem and for personal and economic reasons. This kind of behavior should cease. In a seminar that promotes national transformation, for example, the commitment to bring about change must be upheld endlessly. The passion and aspiration stirred should not be a mere illusion. Dreamers should commit themselves to fulfill their dreams. In the same vein, aspiring leaders should also stop seducing the electorate of empty promises during campaign period. He who proposes must be committed and dedicated to implement. He does not grow weary of doing good, for in due time, he will reap the reward of his constancy.
