Vidal to be buried on October 26

CEBU Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, who died Wednesday in a hospital, will be buried around 9 a.m. of October 26 at the mausoleum of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.

The remains of the late prelate is open for public viewing at the Cathedral until Friday, October 20. He will be transferred to the St. Pedro Calungsod Shrine on D. Jakosalem Street in Cebu City for the fifth anniversary of the canonization of St. Pedro Calungsod on October 21.

The remains will be brought back to the cathedral though at 8 p.m. of the same day for the requiem mass.

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, in his homily Wednesday, said that while many are saddened by Vidal's death, he is still happy that God chose the late prelate to lead his flock in Cebu.

"Yes, we are sorrowful but we are also thankful," he said.

Vidal, who hails from Mogpog, Marinduque, came to Cebu in 1981 after he was appointed as coadjutor bishop of the Archdiocese of Cebu. He served the Archdiocese for three decades before retiring in 2011.

Palma thanked the people who had helped Vidal's stay in Cebu meaningful.

He said one of his fondest memories of the late prelate was when he was appointed as auxiliary bishop of Cebu.

Palma recalled he was very new in Cebu and was assigned as parish priest of the Sto. Rosario Parish when Vidal visited him to check on how he was doing.
