Vugt: Education in our schools – the school must be like a community

THE teachers in the school must form a team with each other and together with their students. Every student is an individual and in need to be given a personal attention. The school should be like a community where every individual should be given a personal attention, teachers and students. It may be a good practice that the teacher stands at the door when the student enters the room and greets him or her personally.

Everyone may be there. This is not easy to do, especially when the teacher has many different subjects to teach. The teachers may check with each other on a particular student. That student may have a special problem with himself or with his family at home. It is possible also that the student wants to leave the school for one reason or another. That would not happen if the teacher would have given enough attention to that student. Then the teacher would know that there is something wrong with that student and also with the school.

If the connection between teachers and students is good, then the school becomes like a family where everyone can be approached by everyone.

I read in Inquirer of August 28, 2016 that there is such a thing as homeschooling education. This was accepted by the Department of Education (DepEd). The reason is, to get the parents involved in the education of their children. And this is important because it is a so-called one–on–education. Every child may be there with its own particularities which need to be addressed to. Parents know these particularities of their children, special problem-children, sickness, maybe, even drug addiction.

This is a big challenge to the parents. One parent said: “When you are with your children 24/7 hours a day, all the ugly parts of you get exposed, because you are invested in a very personal way, when they are not complying with the way you want them to, sometimes you feel irritated, frustrated and pressured”.

A lot of parents, according to the report, realize in the process that you have to fill your own tank emotionally and spiritually to home-school well because when you home-school out of emptiness or trying to make your kids brighter than conventional school kids, the home-schooling experience gets corrupted because then you start to pressure your child.

The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines says that human relationships play a significant role in the development of a person.

Schools are places for us to continue building meaningful relationships.

This is a critical context where we build friendship and relationships that cut across time. These are important series of moments when we nurture loving and life-giving relationships. We also learn endurance and the joy of work, fraternal love, generous – even repeated forgiveness, and above all, divine worship in prayer and the offering of one’s life. We should not deny these opportunities to them”.
