Wa-o, Katiandagho eyed in fund raiser

FORMER WBC International bantamweight champion Rex Wa-o is being tapped for a boxing match in September to raise money for Igorot ring legend Rey Tam who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and a heart ailment.

Fight promoter Brico Santig also wants WBC Youth World super lightweight titlist Sonny Katiandagho for the event.

“Si Rex just returned training early this month. But I’m not sure yet if he is ready kasi halos four months din yung lay off niya. Depende na lang kung ano ipapakita niya sa training,” Santig said.

Katiandagho will be paired against a rated Thailand fighter as the main event.

Katiandagho, a native of General Santos City, last  saw action in October last year, defeating Allan Tanda of Batangas at the at the La Trinidad municipal gym.

Santig added he is expecting at least six undercards and two main events in the fund raiser for the 66-year-old Tam, who is one of only two Filipinos to fight world junior lightweight champion Alexis Arguello.

Tam was ranked No. 1 by the WBC in the super featherweight division and toted an unbeaten streak of 23 fights when he faced Arguello at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California.

In his last fought in 1982, he lost to Flash Villamer in a Philippine lightweight championship fight.

Tam retired with a record of 36-9-1, with 14 KOs. He had surgery for a cataract condition in the right eye in 1984.
