Wagas, youngest mayor in PH, passes away

GILBERT Wagas, the youngest mayor in the country during his time, passed away.

Wagas, 54, died at the National Bilibid Prison in Metro Manila at 7:20 p.m. last December 20 after his second stroke due to hypertension.

Wagas, who was born on September 21, 1963, was appointed officer-in-charge-municipal mayor of Compostela, Cebu in 1986 at the age of 21. On January 18, 1988 and at the age of 23, Wagas was elected mayor of his town.

In 1992, Wagas ran for congressman in Cebu's 5th District and was defeated by then representative (now congressman) Ramon “Nito” Durano III. (EOB/SunStar Cebu)
