ALL 182 barangay captains are expected to attend a seminar on healthcare waste management today in a bid to empower local leaders to report improper disposal of medical wastes in their area.

Councilor Joselle Villafuerte said the information/consultation seminar will be held at SM City Davao from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for barangay officials and 3-5 p.m. for healthcare facilities representatives.

She said representatives from the Department of Health (DOH), Rad Green Solution, City Health Office (CHO) are expected to attend the seminar and discuss pertinent topics.

The seminar is a joint effort of SP Committee on Health, CHO, DOH, Philippine College of Occupational Medicine, and Occupational Nurses Association of the Philippines.

She said the series of incidents on improper disposal of healthcare waste pushed the City Government to educate local leaders.

"Hopefully, we can decide after consultation if we need to create local legislation on healthcare waste," she said.

The city was alarmed over the medical wastes such as bottles of dextrose, butterfly syringes, needles and vials thrown along the coastal area of Talomo District.
