Woman with Zika miscarries in Cebu

OFFICIALS of the Department of Health (DOH) 7 disclosed that a pregnant woman, who was recently quarantined for the Zika virus, reportedly miscarried just two weeks after being diagnosed with the ailment.

But Dr. Shelbay Blanco, head of DOH 7’s Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, said they’ve yet to determine if the Zika virus was to blame for the mother’s miscarriage.

Blanco told reporters that the 32-year-old woman was 11 weeks pregnant when she tested positive for the virus.

The woman hails from Negros Oriental but works in Cebu.

With her miscarriage, Blanco said that the DOH will still monitor her condition but only to a minimal.

Aside from the latest case, the first woman, who tested positive for Zika in Cebu, gave birth to a healthy baby girl earlier this month.

The woman’s baby didn’t show any signs that she was infected by the virus. The baby didn’t suffer from microcephaly, “a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex or age.”

But Blanco said they’re still monitoring the baby’s health to determine if she suffered any complications that can be attributed to Zika.
