Wounded dolphin found in E.B. Magalona

AN INJURED dolphin was found in the waters of Barangay Gahit, E.B. Magalona in Negros Occidental early Wednesday morning, July 12.

Senior Inspector Bonifacio Aral Jr., town police chief, said fishermen saw the dolphin around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

It has wounds on its surface but is alive, Aral said.

Members of the town’s Bantay Dagat responded and helped the dolphin reach the deep waters.

Aral said the dolphin might have been washed ashore after the heavy rains Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the short-finned pilot whale found by residents in the shoreline of Barangay Pahanocoy, Bacolod City last Tuesday was sent back to the sea after it was checked by the authorities.

Residents claimed the whale, which measured 3.4 meters long, had wounds but when checked by the personnel of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), those appeared to be scars.

Regional Director Carlito Delfin of BFAR also advised the public to never touch the marine species so as not to harm them if they are wounded, and should instead immediately report their presence to concerned authorities.
