RICHARD Gasquet concluded his illustrious 23-year professional tennis career on Friday, May 30, 2025, falling 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 to top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the second round of the French Open.

Following his final match on Court Philippe-Chatrier, the 38-year-old Frenchman was honored with a standing ovation and an honorary trophy during an emotional post-match ceremony.

The stadium’s screen featured a video tribute, including appearances from Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, celebrating Gasquet’s remarkable journey.

Gasquet had announced earlier this year that Roland-Garros would serve as the fitting stage for his retirement.

“I couldn’t dream of a better ending than having my last match on this court,” Gasquet shared, visibly moved after his defeat to Sinner. “I will keep loving tennis until the end of my life.”

Tributes poured in, including a heartfelt message from long-time rival Rafael Nadal. Nadal’s Instagram account featured a series of photos of the pair throughout their extensive careers.

“Since we were kids we have shared so many moments together on and off the court. Hundreds of tournaments, cities, matches,” the 14-time French Open champion wrote. “Throughout your great career your talent has been recognized worldwide and I am happy that today you were able to say goodbye to tennis in such a special place as (Roland-Garros). I wish you all the best in the future!”

Gasquet achieved a career-high ranking of World No. 7 in 2007 and reached three major semifinals -- two at Wimbledon and one at the US Open -- though a Grand Slam final eluded him. He amassed 16 ATP singles titles and was a key member of the French team that secured the Davis Cup in 2017.

His extensive career, which began in 2002, saw him play over 1,000 matches, with this French Open marking his 22nd participation in his home Grand Slam.  / FROM THE WIRES
