TEHRAN — At least 71 people were killed in an Israeli strike on Evin Prison in the Iranian capital last week, Iran’s judiciary announced Sunday, June 29, 2025.
The victims of the June 23 strike included prison staff, conscripts, inmates, visiting family members and residents of nearby buildings, judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir said, according to the Mizan news agency.
Jahangir described the attack as “terrorist and brutal,” accusing Israel of once again showing disregard for international law. He said the prison’s infirmary, technical and engineering division and visitation area were also targeted.
He called the strike an “all-out crime,” adding that nearby buildings sustained heavy damage and residents suffered serious injuries.
On June 13, Israel launched major airstrikes on several locations across Iran, including nuclear and military sites, reportedly killing senior commanders, nuclear scientists and numerous civilians. Iran responded with multiple waves of missile and drone attacks on Israel.
A ceasefire between Iran and Israel was reached Tuesday after 12 days of fighting. / XINHUA
