WIMBLEDON champion Iga Swiatek comfortably moved into the third round of the National Bank Open on Wednesday (Thursday, July 31, 2025, PH time), defeating China’s Guo Hanyu 6-3, 6-1.
In her first match since her dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon final, Swiatek quickly established a 4-0 lead, extending her game-winning streak to 24.
“I think I played a really solid match today,” Swiatek commented. “Playing the first match on hard court after a pretty long break from the surface is always tricky, so I’m happy that I just focused on myself, adjusted to the conditions and played well.”
The second-seeded Polish star is set to play Germany’s Eva Lys on Friday (Saturday in PH). Lys advanced after beating Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-4 in a night match.
Two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula of the United States also secured her spot in the next round, overcoming Greece’s Maria Sakkari 7-5, 6-4. Fellow American Amanda Anisimova, seeded fifth, defeated New Zealand’s Lulu Sun 6-4, 7-6 (5).
Sixth-seeded Madison Keys of the United States won against Germany’s Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-1, and former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka of Japan came from behind to beat Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3. / From the wires
